The National Foundation on the Arts and Humanities

The National Foundation on the Arts and the Humanities was established in 1965 to provide financial support to artists, scholars, and cultural and academic institutions. This book traces the controversial history of federal support for the arts and humanities from the early days of the Republic to the late 20th century. It also discusses the people who guided and shaped the foundation-such as NEA chairperson Nancy Hanks-and gives an overview of the grant programs offered by each agency.
