When my husband and I visited India this fall we spent some time in Ahmedabad. Our driver invited us to his home for tea. That's where I met Rusda, the subject of this story: http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/kidspost/meet-rusda-a-10-year-ol...
Johnny is a wonderful guide -- he took us to Sabamarti, Gandhi's ashram, and to the beautifully carved step wells, and to the buildings designed by Louis Kahn. The sign on the back of his car reads "Johnny Born and Bred in Ahmedabad." Johnny started out driving a rickshaw and after several years was able to obtain a loan on a car (with the help of a client). His English is excellent (he learned from clients and watching television) so he's very much in demand. His three children take computer and English classes after school and the oldest is planning on visiting a family in England this summer.
