A Haitian Schoolgirl

On a visit to Haiti in February I met Cynthia, a young girl who lives in a tent camp in downtown Port au Prince. I went to Cynthia's home - a tent large enough to sleep three - early one morning and followed her to school - l'Ecole Nationale Republique du Chili, a public school built with a donation from the Chilean government. A story about Cynthia appeared in Kidspost: http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/kidspost/a-haitian-girls-life-tw...

You can see Cynthia preparing for school and playing with her friends in the audio slideshow that my husband and I put together: http://pulitzercenter.org/reporting/cynthia

I also talked about Cynthia at the Women & Children At Risk panel at GW University on March 6. Cynthia is one of 500,000 people who are still living in tent camps - two years after the earthquake struck Haiti. She does not know how long she and her family will have to remain in the tent camp - for now there is no alternative.
